AMD 2 Ben Lemisch
For AMD 2 I read the blog "wisdom begins in wonder". I found the blog interesting, written by a U of M student who spent her time in Freiburg in the study abroad program. One aspect that I found fascinating, and I'm sure Germans students find interesting as well is the debate over the new "Studiengebuehren" or tuition. Until a few years ago universities in Germany were largely free of charge to the students. This free education still carried a price; the university facilities in Freiburg were nothing like the ones here. Rebecca (the author) described the university in Freiburg as lacking many of the facilities we have here in Michigan, the libraries, gyms, health professionals ect. I had forgotten that not all universities in the world have the same luxuries that we Wolverines enjoy. Like the author I was happy to be reminded exactly what our tuition dollars pay for and that in the end they are worth it. Now German universities are charging somewhere north of 500 Euros for their education. While Im sure this charge will lead to overall improvements in the facilities and quality of education experienced by the German students, 500 Euros is still a pitiful amount compared to what we pay here. Reading the blog made me glad that I attend the university I do and yes, even pay the amount I do to go here.
