AMD 5

For this AMD, I researched the city of Berlin, since we recently began studying some landmarks in chapter 11. Berlin is the "Hauptstadt" of Deutschland. There are approximately 3.5 million inhabitants. My main research was on the events leading up to World War II and WWII itself in Berlin. In 1938, the Jews inhabiting Berlin were sent to concentration camps such as Auschwitz. Large parts of Berlin were destroyed by the Allies in WWII. One interesting fact is that the Kaiser Wilhelm church withstood the bombing raids, even though it was actually hit by a bomb. In 1948, the Soviet Union made a blockade preventing the western allies from entering the eastern half of Berlin. We know this blockade as the Berlin Wall. This was the beginning of the tensions between the US and the Soviet Union which would eventually lead to the Cold War. In 1989 at the end of the Cold War, the wall was taken down, once again uniting east and wesst Berlin. Berlin has an amazing history.
