For this chapter's AMD I went and found an episode of The Colbert Report in which he interviews Hans Beinhold, the German embassador to the UN. I was inspired to find out more of the German sense of humor from watching "Dinner for One". I must say that Herr Beinhold did not disappoint. For being considered by many, including the creators of "South Park", an unfunny people they are hillarious. I loved Colberts jokes about the traditional German symbol of happiness, the frown. When Herr Beinhold pointed out how weak the cupcake was and how it celebrates the slow approach of death I lost it. It fit wonderfully into the stereotypes that the rest of the world has of the Germans. They are thought of as being an unfunny, mechanical people who's only concern is function over form. Herr Beinhold plays into this through the entire skit up until he pulls out the Klondike Bar. With this he silences the criticisms of the German's lack of humor and shows that they actually are a wonderfully funny people. Between this skit and "Dinner for One" I have found a new appreciation for German comedy and look forward to future examples of it in this class.
Below is the link to the video, it starts around half way through the clip.
