Kapitel 10 Kultur

Ich finde den Artikel des Herrentag interessant. I pretty much find anything about German boozing culture interesting. Maybe it's because there's basically no culture of that kind here, in fact it is entirely frowned upon, or maybe I just find it amazing that Germany seems to have so many holidays dedicated almost solely to drinking.
It is also interesting, though, that this one day boozefest actually has religious roots. Their Father's Day is actually religiously based on the Ascension of Jesus into heaven, while it seems like in America Father's Day was added as an afterthought to Mother's Day. In my opinion, that makes it a more significant holiday. And furthermore, that sort of makes it a slap in the face to the religious aspect.
All in all, it's still interesting to read about German holidays and how they are treated and celebrated and how they have changed. In contrast to Herrentag, Weihnachten is still treated with the religiously happy spirit that it has been since the 16th century. This is good, I guess, but it's also disappointing to see that Germans aren't getting drunk on EVERY holiday they have. Christmas for them is the way it is for us: good spirit, giving, and classical tradition.
