Obviously I wouldn’t be there for as long as this girl; in fact I’d only be there a few weeks, but I still enjoyed reading the experience someone close to my own age had in Germany. Expense, thankfully wouldn’t be a problem, at least not to the point of getting a job. It’s good to hear that German businesses are accepting of students, though, in case I do decide to do something like study abroad in the future. It’s also good to hear that she got help from German friends, and that she wasn’t avoided by Germans in general. Obviously, in attempting to speak the language, I can think of nothing better than being surrounded by native speakers. I was also interested to hear about the laundry and food. We’ve never come across those topics in our Kultur readings, and to be honest I’m not sure I would like to have to put in so much time and effort into washing and drying my clothes. Likewise, I think transitioning to buying food fresh everyday rather than at Costco, or whatever other store, once every few weeks or so, would be a tough sell. Still, I think this blog, although it can be very personal at times, is a good advertisement for studying abroad and varying one’s cultural experience in general.
