We talked mostly about random topics. He had just graduated from the German school system and had a job as a systems engineer. I asked him about his schooling, since it's significantly different from ours in the US. He didn't go to a university, but got his training and education from what would equate to our high school.
When we had communication issues, it was a little tough to work around, since he didn't speak any English besides what little he had picked up from the Internet. For the most part, we were able to carry on a conversation without too much trouble from my end, although we weren't engaged in a particularly complex conversation. I found that the most useful thing to know was vocabulary. Even if I didn't recognize some of the conjugations he used, I was able to get the basic meaning of what he said.
