Guten abend!
Upon reading "Dinner for Who?" I find myself oddly thinking of the harry potter / twilight fangirlism, and all I can muster is a sense of dread or fear. That established, I rushed through the rest of this article because thats more reminder than I need.
On the other hand, the "Sorry, We're Closed" article was much more interesting to me, and less horrifying. I've never been much of an "emergency shopper", so the idea of urgently needing something is something I am hard-pressed to feel. The fact that I personally do prefer Sunday to be a day of relaxation and not a day of work means that overall i'm actually tentatively in FAVOR of businesses being closed / restricted hours on a Sunday. I acknowledge that as not too normal, but... yes.
The article I was most interested in, however, was Frohe Weihnachten, which talks about the Christmas markets in Germany. One of my friend's who lives in Aachen helps run her Father's booth every year, so I had already known the market exists, but inasmuch as I never actually asked for the details involved (except knowing it was long hours every day and commercial madness), I didn't really know anything. (I think their booth sold hand-crafted items and semi-ornate combs/jewellery/brushes and the like...) Regardless, the first page didn't have much specific information I was too interested in, other than letting me infer that the different cities had a tendency to specialize in different things and I began to hunt for a mention of Aachen in the article. (On the other hand, the Alexanderplatz is almost assuredly not as bad as was stated, or I have a hard time understanding how it would be able to continue to exist year after year.)
Page 3 struck gold, however! I saw Aachen and perked up.... until the discussion was more about specific cookies than the actual market. While it was somewhat cool to be reminded where Charlegmagne reigned, the market was barely mentioned and that was highly disappointing to me.
Well, I guess that is all for this week. Thanks for reading! (Tschüss!)
