For my AMD 4 I have decided to write about my experience, looking for an apartment in Berlin to live in for around 3 months. I have found that during summer many students tend to travel and sublet their apartments. Also, a lot of students or younger people renting out/ subletting rooms in apartments tend to speak multiple languages and look for people who speak multiple languages. This seams to a common theme as they are looking for more people to practice their other languages with. A term commonly used when looking for sublets is “zwischenmiete”. It is when people sublet their apartments fully furnished. I have found that they tend to rent out their apartments for very short periods of time to people looking to stay for a short holiday. As a result, while searching for places to live I have found that they either list their open dates that are around 2-3 weeks long intended for short stays, or they list a starting day and leave it open ended, intended for long stays or multiple short stays. There were also a lot of sites that organized people who were specifically interested in subletting their place only for short stays and were capped off at a month. I also noticed that most sites and listings are put up the month before one would move in. They seemed to be more geared towards people looking for a place to stay as soon as possible and not in the future. Some other terms I found include the following: “Ausstattung” means equipment (this used as a title to describe what things are included, such as ac, washing machines, or kitchen appliances), “Weitere Angaben” means further details, (this is used as a title to describe any other features, such as location, what is included in the rent or apartment, what kind of people they are looking for, what kind of people they are), “WG Merkmale” means Aparment-sharing community features (used to describe the number and gender of the people currently living in the apartment and the number and gender of the people they are looking for).
