After reading and earlier post about FOOD, by Brett C. I got the idea to talk about one of my favorite cookies ever, lebkuegens. Lebkuegens, as my grandmother spelled it, or Lebkuchens as it shows up in google, is an incredibly tasty cookie that my dad's side of the family makes each year around Christmas. The recipe was passed down from my Great Great Grandmother who used to live in the Alsace region of once southern Germany, now France. I didn't really know much about this passed down recipe until it recently got brought up in conversation with my dad as he informed that the recipe for the Lebkuegen was the the oldest recipe that is in our family, and that's saying something. The recipe according to my family's tradition is pretty simple as it only requires dark molasses, sugar, flower, eggs and walnuts. Mix together the dark molasses, flower, and eggs, spread them out on a cookie sheet and shape the dough so that it makes a diamond shape. I'm not sure why a diamond, but that is the only way I have ever eaten them. once the cookies are baked cover them with chopped walnuts followed by a sugar glaze. Here's a link I found for the "modern" version of the cookie http://allrecipes.com/recipe/lebkuchen-i/ . And here's the wiki link for some other back-round information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebkuchen . Maybe I'll bring in my family's tradition of the Lebkuegen into class sometime soon day. Lebkuegens schmeckt mir gut!
