Kapitel Zehn Kultur
For this blog assignment I chose to read about the short skit, "Dinner For One." As soon as I started to read about "Dinner for One" I knew I had to watch the skit, as it seemed hilarious. I could not believe I had never seen it before. I have no idea or speculation as to how this became a New Year's eve tradition, but I could definitely see why. This skit is hilarious, and has the potential to be a great drinking game that could really get you messed up, depending on whatever your poison is. A person commented on youtube suggesting this a as to how to play the game, "drink every time the butler drinks and drink every time he trips over the tiger." If i were to keep up with the Butler and his drinks, I'd probably be just as smashed as he was at about 6:00 minutes in. I think my favorite part of the skit was just watching the Butler and his drunkenness towards the end. I highly suggest watching this film and reading some of the comments about it. Almost every single comment relates to Germany, german class or New Years in some form or another. I definitely know how I'll be spending 10 minutes this New Years, watching the butler and trying keep up with him. I really want to talk to a German native and get to the bottom of what makes this so appealing to them? I don't disagree, it's hilarious, but for the whole Nation to watch this every New Years eve is mind blowing. It's almost comparable to our American obsession of...well I can't think of anything our entire Nation watches traditionally except for the Superbowl. I wonder if this tradition can withstand the test of time and last another 40 years. Same procedure as every year James!
