Für meine AMD 6 habe ich ein Film gesehen. I watched Mulan auf Deutsch! It is one of my favorite movies (I’m a Disney geek) and I can pretty much quote every line so I was able to understand a lot of the German, even without subtitles. It's always interesting to watch movies and hear how the colloquialisms and puns are translated. It's nice that I can now understand enough of German to know when the translation had been altered, so that it uses a different phrase to say the same thing. This was especially common in the songs, where the German must fit into the rhythm of the original verses.
This turned out to be the perfect music to watch during this unit because the famed song (mein Lieblingslied) "I'll make a man out of you," or "Sei ein Mann" contains a lot of subjunctives. I found this interesting because I have listened to this song at least a million times in English without noticing this, but hearing it in German I was more aware of the grammatical constructions and pronunciations. I could hear the signature "hätte" in the phrase "Hätte ich doch nur beim Turnen nicht gepennt!" which means "I should not have slept during gym!" This is actually a variation from the original English lyrics, which say "Boy was I a fool in school for cutting gym," which is very vernacular and would have been difficult to translate directly into German while keeping with the rhythm of the song.
Watching Mulan was a great way to relax and explore my German listening skills.
