For my AMD 6 I have decided to write a little overview of Berlin. Berlin is made of many districts or “Bezirke”. Each district is made up of several neighborhoods. Each of the Districts and neighborhoods are filled with different styles. Originally, Berlin was divided into 23 districts, which as of January 2001, have been reduced to 12 for administrative efficiency. The districts can be roughly grouped into six districts: Mitte (Mitte), City West (Charlottenburg, Wilmersdorf, Schöneberg, Tiergarten), East Central (Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg), North (Spandau, Reinickendorf, Weißensee, Pankow, Wedding), East (Lichentenberg, Hohenschönhausen, Marzahn, Hellersdorf), and South (Steglitz, Zehlendorf, Tempelhof, Neukölln, Treptow, Köpenick). Mitte is the historical center of Berlin. It is filled with galleries, clubs, as well as, many historical sites. In City West, more specifically former West Berlin, one can find many luxury shopping sites, restaurants, and hotels. East Central is flooded with cafes, bars, trendy shops, and even some museums in Kreuzberg near the border of Mitte. North is made up of older towns known for their beauty and spacious feeling (compared to the inner city). East is also filled with some very notable museums. South is made up of a mixture of different districts. Zehlendorf is one of Berlin’s wealthiest and greenest districts. However, in Köpenick one finds swaths of forest around Berlin’s largest lake, Müggelsee.
