AMD 6-The Heidelberg Ann Arbor

This weekend the board of governors for my fraternity happened to be in town, and the dinner we agreed to happened to be at the Heidelberg. So here's my experience at an "authentic" German restaurant.

The website totes the Heidelberg as traditional German cuisine with some American dishes worked in. "Our menu features the traditional German offerings from marinated Herring and Spaetzle to Schnitzel, Sauerbraten and Knockwurst. We also have a variety of American classics including burgers, steaks and pastas." There was a fair amount of different Schnitzels from what I remember, and I decided to try the A la Holstein Wiener Schnitzel with a fried egg and capers on top with German potatoes and Spaetzle. I don't eat German food often, but this was better than I was expecting. The Schnitzel was delicious, the potatoes were good, and the Spaetzle was much better than expected. The only Spaetzle I've ever had was in the dining halls here, and this was completely different. It was covered in a really good gravy and quite flavorful.
Like I would expect from a German restaurant and bar, the selection of beer was huge. I couldn't order any, but one of the older guys there (who is actually a professional beer judge) ordered a real German beer and said it was among the best he's ever had.
Inside, the Heidelberg was modeled after a Bavarian style with ornate wooden beams overhead and big chandeliers. The walls were all painted with castles and German landscapes. It was probably what any American would expect out of a restaurant named the Heidelberg.

Alles in allem war die Abendessen in der Heidelberg gut. Mein Essen war sehr lecker. Es gibt gut dass haben wir ein deutsches Restaurant in Ann Arbor.
