Kultur 11 - Ben Oztalay

The shorter-term divide between East and West Berlin is something that I could see going away in the near-ish future, although it seems like the cultural aspects of the divide are making their way back. I was surprised to read, however, that Germany has a divide between North and South much like we have here in the US. It was amusing to see that even German subtitles of a Southern English accent translate to a Southern German accent.

Considering how things are in the US between North and South, I wouldn't be surprised if the same sort of thing continues in Germany for quite some time. I wouldn't have expected the East/West Berlin divides to have even existed in the first place. The way I always understood the situation was that the wall fell, Germany was reunited, and everyone was happy. I would even go so far as to say that I thought the residents of East Berlin were unhappy until the wall fell and external control of the nation went away. Those could be my own personal misconceptions, or it could be a broader Western or American sort of thing.
