For my AMD I continued reading The German Ideology by Karl Marx. The primary section of my reading was about a French socialist movement from the early 18th century called Saint-Simonism. Marx personally approved of the movement and the section revolves around defending the theory by disclaiming Herr Grün’s interpretation of it as a misrepresentation. This is done through analyzing comments made by Grün, speculating as to where they originated from, and showing how Grün had distorted the original comments; additionally, he shows how mistakes from other scholars of Saint Simonism had been preserved in Grün work. Many events and actions of Saint-Simon’s life are explored, including his involvement in the American War, and relations with the Dutch and Spanish governments. Also, the later period of Saint-Simon’s life, which included the establishment of a salon in order to “study the men of learning” is mentioned; yet, the focus is always clearing up misrepresentations on the part of Grün.
