I've visited Germany several times and experienced the chaos of their roads, supermarkets, and queues first hand. The Autobahn is great because you can get places quickly, but also terrifying because of how intense German drivers are. Once my mom was driving behind one of our German friends who decided to take us through the left most lane. My mom freaked out and couldn't keep up because the speeds were so high. Harrowing though it was, we did get where we were going pretty fast.
I've had similar experiences waiting in lines in Germany. No one likes waiting over there, not on the highway and not in lines. If you're waiting to get a metro ticket, you have to be on guards at all times because people will cut and push and shove so that you will either get beat up or end up waiting for much longer than necessary. You have to stand your ground and try to hide the fact that you aren't German; if you let on that you're unfamiliar with their ways they'll be that much more confident that you can be pushed back in the line.
It was interesting to read about how cars are careful to stop before red lights because in a similar fashion, J-walking is strict taboo in Germany. A German walker would never think of crossing the road before the light is red, and German police officers won't hesitate to arrest a pedestrian who jumps the gun. Ann Aroborians would not survive.
