AMD 3-Wienerisch

I decided to do a little more research on the topic of Wienerisch, the city dialect of Vienna. The phrasebook (in a fittingly sarcastic way) presents Wienerisch as the up-and-coming language of the world. Some of the phrases look just like normal German with slightly different pronunciation, but others look totally foreign to me and possibly to many Germans. I looked on Wiki for some more information and history of Wienerisch and this is what i found:

The dialect takes from the influence of Austrian German, some from French, Italian, Czech, and very old German. What is strange and funny is that Viennese German is such a mash-up of these influences is that throughout Austria, the dialect is rarely understood outside of Vienna. "Wia kummt ma aum bestn notch" is the Wienerisch way of saying "Wie kommt man am..." so the pronunciation is definitely different and could be hard to understand.

Another interesting point that I found on the Wiki is that one of the tendencies of the Viennese is to use a lot of sarcasm. When I started to read the phrasebook, the introduction made a lot of sense in that context. It is said that the tendency to use such sarcasm, without gestures or accompanying inflections, this is a source of confusion for tourists and Standard German speakers alike. It seems as tho Vienna could be a hostile environment for tourists in this sense. The introduction to the phrasebook totes Wienerisch as a language that is going to take over the world, when the fact is that it's unique aspects are starting to become more like standard German. Unfortunate.
